Wenge (Millettia laurentii) is an exotic wood from Central and West Africa, mainly originating from Congo, Cameroon, Gabon and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Instantly recognisable, it features a deep, almost black brown colour crossed by fine chocolate-brown streaks that create a bold and graphic contrast. Its generally straight grain and pronounced texture give it a dense and structured appearance, highly appreciated in contemporary interiors. Extremely hard and heavy, with a density close to 900 kg/m³, wenge offers excellent stability and outstanding durability. These qualities make it a material of choice for high-end furniture, modern interiors, decorative veneers, flooring and worktops.

From an environmental standpoint, wenge is listed under CITES Appendix II, meaning its trade is regulated: every imported or exported batch must be accompanied by proper traceability documentation. The species remains available but under high demand, requiring controlled and responsible harvesting.

In the workshop, wenge demands precision: machining is difficult and abrasive, requiring perfectly sharpened carbide tools. Gluing can be tricky due to its natural oils, and thorough degreasing is often necessary prior to pressing. Its open grain may require pore-filling before finishing, but it responds beautifully to oiled or matte finishes, which enhance the depth and warmth of its figure. In veneer form, its price varies with quality and figure: expect €25 to €50 per m² for standard grades, and €90 to €120 per m² for wide, well-matched leaves. In solid wood, prices typically range from €3,500 to €5,000 per m³.

Admired for its noble and timeless appearance, wenge stands out as a wood of character—perfect for elevating contemporary creations and exceptional furniture, while retaining a natural and understated elegance.
